 2018 Preview 


       Evangel Christian Academy finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record.

       The Lions lost as many games as in any season since 2008. The defense allowed a team record 477 points last season. The Lions have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018.

       Since 2010, Evangel Christian Academy has gone a combined 27-55. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class AA over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 17 seasons, Evangel Christian Academy has not won much with a record of 52-120. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class AA and 36th in the AISA. The Lions have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time.




       The Lions are led by head coach Andy Whatley who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-45 over the past six seasons at Evangel Christian Academy. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Whatley.

       Coach Whatley's overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 34-84 (28.8%). Over the course of his career, Coach Whatley's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times .

       The Evangel Christian Academy Lions will play in Class AA region one during the 2018 season.

       It will be an uphill battle for the Lions if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just a single win last year, Evangel Christian Academy will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season.

       The Lions open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Chambers Academy on Friday, August 24 at Torbert Field. Last year the Chambers Academy Rebels finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class A region one. The Rebels lost in the Class A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Patrician Academy. They final score was 22-20 in Troy.

       Evangel Christian Academy and Chambers Academy have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Lions have a 2-3-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2007 with Chambers Academy winning by a score of 44-12.

Bart Starr received coaching from Kentucky great Babe Parilli his senior season at Sidney Lanier in hopes of joining Bear Bryant at Kentucky. He had to settle for Alabama.
